According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Everton boss Frank Lampard would love to bring a ‘leader’ like Wolves captain Conor Coady to Goodison Park in the summer transfer window.

Everton have experienced one of the most horrid and disappointing seasons in the club’s history as they sit 18th in the table in a relegation battle which could see the club lose their Premier League status for the first time.

There are a myriad of factors as to why they have failed to find consistency and a winning formula, but the lack of a leader to motivate the players is one of the big concerning factors for Everton brass to address in the coming transfer window.

With this in the mind of the Everton hierarchy, rumours of a potential summer move for Wolves’ leading man Coady have started to come to light. There is no doubt it will be difficult for the Toffees to tempt Coady away from his beloved Wolves side, but recent links with Spurs defender Cameron Carter-Vickers could mean Coady’s time is up at the Molineux.

Do you remember who Wolves signed Ivan Cavaleiro from?

Speaking with GiveMeSport, O’Rourke believes a move for Coady would be a coup for the Merseyside team despite the difficulties they may face.

He said: “It would be a tough one, but I can see why Everton would be looking at Conor Coady. Obviously, you’ve got the Kevin Thelwell link from their time together at Wolves. He was involved when Coady first joined the club as well.

“Conor Coady would be a big improvement on what Everton have got in their defence right now. He’s a good defender but is also a big leader in the dressing room, which he has shown for Wolves and England. That’s why he’s always in Gareth Southgate’s squad – he’s such a good member of the squad.

“That’s what Everton need right now. They need leaders and somebody to help get them out of trouble. Coady would fit that bill.”

Should Everton sign Coady?

Everton have struggled with consistency in their backline all season, as they have had a number of injuries to important players like Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey and Nathan Patterson, as well as many poor performances from those who have played regular minutes.

In order to correct this next term, either in the Premier League or Championship, they will desperately need to sign a player of Coady’s ability both as a player and leader. He has been hailed by Wolves manager Bruno Lage this season, stating him as a ‘leader’ and that he is ‘proud to work with him’.

Coady has been a rock in the defence of a team that ranks as the fourth-best in terms of goals conceded. Everton could use someone who knows defensive stability like that. He has averaged 0.8 tackles,0.6 interceptions, 3.1 clearances, and 0.7 blocks per game this season for the Midlands team (WhoScored).

Regardless of Everton’s league status next season, they need leadership and someone for their players to look to during hard times. They are going to have a number of these hard times in the future, and without someone like Coady, things could get even worse.
