Everton will likely have a clause in Frank Lampard’s contract that would allow the club to start afresh in the summer with a new manager if they deem it necessary.

That is according to journalist Dean Jones, who has been speaking on the latest episode of Touchline Talk amid Everton’s relegation fears.

Who would you prefer to manage Everton next season?

And Jones believes that should Lampard face the sack at Goodison Park, former player Wayne Rooney could be his potential replacement, with his future at Derby County under speculation.

The Toffees salvaged a point late on in their last game on Merseyside on Wednesday night against Leicester City, with a late goal from Richarlison opening up a four-point gap on 18th-placed Burnley.

Rooney was linked with the job at Goodison Park just a few months ago but decided to stay at Derby, however, Jones feels he would be the obvious choice should the Toffees sack Lampard.

He said: “I think, personally, that there is a possibility that they part ways in the summer – even if they stay up. We’ll have to wait and see whether that does happen.

“But if it did, for example, then they have to go and get Wayne Rooney. And that’s the way I would kind of be looking at that. I’ve got a feeling they might even have a clause where they can walk away from Frank Lampard at the end of this season.

“And if that’s the case, then Wayne Rooney could be ideal to just kind of rebuild that club.”

We will be interested to see how this pans out at Everton over the next few weeks, with their Premier League status still not confirmed for next season.

There has not been much of an improvement in the results since Lampard’s appointment in January, which may concern some and open up the idea of starting again.

Rooney has shown some good signs as a manager at Derby with the fight shown despite the situation the club found itself in financially.

However, Lampard also had relative success with the Rams and he has struggled since making the step up to the top flight, which may provide the board with some food for thought as far as Rooney is concerned.
