Journalist David Ornstein has said that Arsenal admire Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the Gunners thought to be ‘monitoring’ his situation at Everton.

The Gunners appear to be looking for a new striker this summer as they aim to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who left during the January transfer window. Between them, centre-forwards Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah have managed just 13 goals in all competitions – a number which can obviously be improved upon.

Reports have emerged saying Arsenal are leading the race for Manchester City’s Jesus, but Ornstein has also revealed they are looking at Calvert-Lewin.

He told The Athletic Football Podcast: “One of the players that we understand they have admiration for is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, we’ve reported that before, and they’ll be monitoring closely what happens at Everton, of course, and also whether he sort of returns to form because he’s not had the best season. It’s been a little bit disrupted by injuries, but he does have admirers at the Emirates Stadium.”

TIF Thoughts on Calvert-Lewin…

One thing that could persuade Calvert-Lewin to come to Arsenal, should they want him, is the fact that he’s such good friends with Aaron Ramsdale, who played with the England striker at Sheffield United’s academy.

It has been a difficult season for all involved at Everton, including Calvert-Lewin. He has managed just 13 appearances in the Premier League, with injuries causing him to spend the rest of the campaign on the sidelines. He has managed three goals, but it is his form in previous seasons that will interest the Gunners.

Last term, the 25-year-old found the back of the net 16 times in the top flight, while he scored 13 times the campaign before. This had Carlo Ancelotti calling him a ‘top striker’ during his time at the club. He offers a physical presence up front, and if used correctly, he could be a menace for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Jesus is a different player and has even been used on the wing frequently by Pep Guardiola this campaign for Manchester City. Arsenal moving for Calvert-Lewin instead could be a superb alternative if they can’t get the Brazil international through the door.
