Arsenal have had contact with Darwin Nunez’s representatives in January and could look to pursue him in the summer transfer window.

Insider Fabrizio Romano believes the Gunners will be looking to make signing a striker in the summer their priority as he spoke on the latest Here We Go podcast.

Who would you prefer this summer?

The Benfica striker has been heavily linked in recent months with a potential move to the Premier League with Arsenal’s London rivals, West Ham United, said to be interested.

It is believed the Hammers submitted a late £40m bid for the Uruguayan in the January window but saw their attempts rejected by the Portuguese side.

Nunez has impressed massively this season with Benfica having netted 20 goals in 22 appearances in the Portuguese top flight as well as four goals in the Champions League (via Transfermarkt).

And Romano believes the 22-year-old could be a real option for Arteta in the summer as they remain in pole position for the final Champions League spot:

(17:30) “Arsenal also had some contacts with his [Nunez’s] agent in January. So let’s see what happens because also West Ham wanted him and also West Ham will go for a top striker in the summer.

“So will be summer of strikers and Darwin Nunez could be one of the possibilities together with Jonathan David. Arsenal are in the process, but they will take their time and they hope to secure Champions League football sport that is key to understand what kind of striker they will sign.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

Arsenal have made huge strides this season under Mikel Arteta with a spot in the Champions League looking like a real possibility.

And they have done so without a prolific threat in front of goal from their striker options with Alexandre Lacazette only able to boast four goals this season in the Premier League.

With a striker of Nunez’s potential up top, we think it would be a huge step in the right direction for the Gunners as they aim to cement their spot in the Premier League’s top four.
