Tottenham Hotspur do have a mandatory buy clause in the contract for Dejan Kulusevski who joined on loan in January.

However, there are a number of objectives that need to be met for this to become the case, according to Fabrizio Romano speaking on the latest Here We Go podcast.

Is Kulusevski Paratici's best signing?

No

The Swedish forward has made an electric start to life in north London with two goals and four assists in nine Premier League appearances (via Transfermarkt).

Kulusevski’s loan deal is believed to be 18-months long and the objectives for a mandatory purchase all come in the 2022/23 campaign which includes Spurs qualifying for the Champions League.

And Romano shed some light on what exactly needs to happen for the 21-year-old’s move to be made mandatory, otherwise leaving Daniel Levy with the option to buy:

(18:40) “I wanted to clarify some details because Tottenham fans asked me and I wanted to clarify. So there is a mandatory buy clause for Tottenham for Dejan Kulusevski and this clause is for €35m (£29.1m).

“They already paid €10m (£8.3m) for the loan until June 2023. So this is already paid €10m. Then there are €35m mandatory by close in case he will play 50% of the games of the next Premier League season. So not this season, but next Premier League season 2022/23. 50% of the games by 45 minutes this is an important detail. Then Tottenham should reach Champions League football so are both conditions not one of them, both conditions.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

Regardless of the clauses in Kulusevski’s contract, if he carries on the incredible start he has made at Spurs, we have little doubt Spurs will sign him.

Kulusevski has already scored as many goals in the Premier League as Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura have this season and he only arrived in January.

The winger has cemented his spot in Antonio Conte’s XI since arriving and if he is able to carry the form shown into next season, then we struggle to see how he would not tick off the game time objective in his contract.
