Presenter Richard Gordon has claimed that Alfredo Morelos was potentially attempting to get a yellow card last night to miss the second leg against Red Star Belgrade.

Rangers emphatically beat Red Star Belgrade 3-0 at Ibrox last night thanks to goals from James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos and Leon Balogun.

With the second leg becoming a somewhat simpler task for Gers with a three-goal lead from the first leg, Morelos would have missed that game if he were to pick up another yellow card.

Gordon spoke on the Sportsound podcast and noticed something about Morelos’ actions in the latter stages of the game.

He said: “There was a scenario towards the end there where you were all convinced that Alfredo Morelos was trying to get himself booked to miss the second leg.”

TIF Thoughts on Alfredo Morelos and the comments from Richard Gordon…

Morelos has been excellent for Rangers this season, scoring 19 goals and registering eight assists in 39 games in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Morelos has been in particularly good form in the Europa League, as he has an average player rating of 7.16 in the competition, as per SofaScore. So the panel’s hunch may well be correct, as Giovanni van Bronckhorst would surely rather the forward miss a tie where they are already three goals up over a game in the next round with much more meaning – even if a suspension was earned in suspicious circumstances.

Morelos has received heaps of praise in the past from former players, including Andy Halliday, who named the Colombian in his best XI that he has played with, describing the forward as, “the best player in the league hands down” back in 2020.
