Celtic maintained their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night after two goals in the second half sealed the points.

Ange Postecoglou’s side took all three points from their game at Parkhead against St Mirren but it seemed Daizen Maeda did not exactly impress Celtic journalist Tony Haggerty.

Should Maeda be dropped on Sunday?

No

No

The Australian manager had to rely on goals from Cameron Carter-Vickers and Callum McGregor in the second 45 with his front three proving toothless in front of goal.

And Maeda was certainly that, the Japanese striker had six shots over the course of the 90 minutes but only one of them was directed at Jak Alnwick’s goal (via SofaScore).

The 24-year-old lasted the full 90 minutes against Stephen Robinson’s side, however, Haggerty was clearly not won over by the Japanese striker’s display as he awarded him just a 6/10 rating:

“The Japanese striker kept his place in the side owing to Giorgos Giakoumakis’s enforced absence through illness. He is lively and full of energy and endeavour,” Haggerty wrote for The Celtic Way.

“However, the attacker still has a bit to go yet before he fully convinces everyone that he is worthy of a permanent deal.”

TIF Thoughts on Haggerty’s assessment…

Much like Reo Hatate, Maeda made an impressive start to his life at Celtic having joined in January after netting two league goals in his opening three appearances (via Transfermarkt).

However, the 24-year-old has been unable to find the back of the net in his last four league games which will be a big concern given Celtic’s absences.

And given the striker is still currently on loan, it seems the striker still has a lot to prove to the Celtic faithful with a pattern of inconsistency beginning to form after his electric start.

With Giakoumakis out of action on Wednesday night, it is apparent Haggerty feels Maeda could be dropped against Livingston if the Greek striker is back fit.
