PodcastsTottenham Hotspur winger Bryan Gil has admitted earlier this week the Premier League has provided him with a big physical challenge.

And Alasdair Gold has been speaking about the Spaniard on his latest YouTube video with the winger currently out on loan away from the north London club.

Were Spurs right to loan out Gil?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Gil signed for the Lilywhites last summer in a deal with Sevilla which saw Spurs send Erik Lamela and £21.6m to the La Liga side, however, in January, Gil left for the remainder of the season to Valencia.

And having slotted straight into the Valencia starting XI, the 21-year-old has spoken to the Spanish outlet, AS, on his struggles to match the physicality demanded of the Premier League:

“The adaptation for me was difficult. It is a very physical football, back and forth,” Gil said.

And Gold has been sharing his thoughts on the recruitment shown by the north London club over the summer during his latest video:

“He’s admitted this week. Yes, he found the physical side of the Premier League hard, which is, of course, an indictment of the Tottenham recruitment process. And then they’ve chucked him out, where he looks like he’s going to become a star again.

“So there’s two sides to that. There’s did you recruit properly? Did you do the processes in the right way to identify whether he was able to play in the Premier League? And the flip side is if you still believe that is the case, then you don’t send them away. You work on him, you help him.

“I think he said something like, he’d put on a couple of kilograms, you know, he has been building up muscle and you just let him adapt, whereas instead, they’ve let him go back to Spain.

“Where yes, he’ll get lots of minutes. But then if he does come back to Tottenham in the summer, it’s just almost like bang straight into the kind of a surprise of the physical nature of the Premier League again, it’s just it’s not joined up.”

TIF Thoughts on Gil’s future…

We do understand where Gold is coming from in suggesting Spurs should have kept ahold of Gil instead of loaning him out as it would’ve allowed them to keep a closer eye on his physical development.

However, with the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski in January, w0uld Gil have stood a chance of getting any minutes under Antonio Conte?

Gil had played just 29 minutes of action in the Premier League under the Italian and with the Swedish international now becoming a regular, we think this would have put Gil even further back in the pecking order.

Instead, he is playing regular game time and continuing his development as a young footballer. And as long as he is continuing his muscle gain as suggested, we think the loan was a better option than staying.
