Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has given his thoughts on Callum Wilson and his comeback from his current injury.

ilson suffered an injury around the turn of the year and has been out of action ever since, with Newcastle United giving an initial timeline of eight weeks for him to return to action.

Given how well Wilson has performed for Newcastle since his arrival back in 2020 – finishing as their top scorer last year and leading the way this year despite his injury – getting him back looked like it was going to be imperative in their hopes of staying in the Premier League. However their recent run of form without him has given them an incredible chance of doing so even if he hasn’t been there to score some goals.

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

A recent report from The Telegraph has claimed that both he and fellow absentee Kieran Trippier could soon be on their way back into the side as they note they are “aiming to return for Newcastle United in their potential crucial Premier League games against Crystal Palace and Norwich next month.”

Speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters (14:39), Kennedy appeared to confirm those reports by stating that he had heard something similar and that he hoped to see him get back into the side in the last few games before the end of the season:

“I’d love to see him get a chance and come back this season. And it looks like he’s heading in the right direction. They’re going to take it easy with him…. I’ve heard little rumours, I’ve seen the Telegraph did something but I’d heard the same, that they’d kind of pencilled in Norwich for a return.

“So that’d be really positive because that would give him the last four games of the season. And I wouldn’t go against him getting another couple of goals in that little run even though he hasn’t played a lot of games.”

Will Callum Wilson play again for Newcastle this season?

No

It would be a big risk for Newcastle to play him at the back end of the season, especially given the severity of his injury, because there will be every chance that he reinjures himself which could cause them some problems moving into the start of next season.

But then again, with the summer transfer window coming up, and Newcastle clear in their ambitions, it might well be that Wilson’s place in the side could be in jeopardy, so he might need the last few weeks of the season to prove to Eddie Howe that he deserves to be in consideration rather than letting the club bring in someone else in to replace him.

So it will be very interesting to see how they manage his minutes when he does come back, if it is indeed in early April as suggested, because until safety is secured, there is a lot at stake on the line both for the club as well as the player that needs to be weighed up.
