Newcastle United would be sending a real signal of intent if they were able to sign Jan Oblak in the summer transfer window.

That is according to football journalist Pete O’Rourke, who has been speaking to This Is Futbol ahead of Newcastle’s first summer window with their new owners.

Do NUFC need to upgrade Dubravka?

The Toon have been linked with the Atletico Madrid shot-stopper, who has just over one year remaining on his current deal with the reigning La Liga champions.

Goal has reported that the Slovenian international is reportedly open to a move to a Premier League club – but only one he deems as posing a real title charge.

Newcastle are still not mathematically safe from relegation, however, they have come a long way under Eddie Howe in recent months and O’Rourke believes the 29-year-old’s possible arrival would be a huge message to the rest of the league:

So if Newcastle could go and get him it would send out a real signal,” said O’Rourke.

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

We absolutely agree with O’Rourke. This would be a huge statement of intent from the Newcastle owners given Oblak is rated as one of the best goalkeepers in world football.

And given there is talk of the Tyneside club looking to make an upgrade on Martin Dubravka, this would be a massive improvement.

Oblak not only has a La Liga title to his name now, but he has vast experience playing in the Champions League, which would provide another experienced head to the dressing room to help them on their way to their ambitious targets.
