Newcastle United reporter Chris Waugh has divulged some information regarding Martin Dubravka and his current injury status.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper had a bit of a tough start to the season as he had to start late to recover from an injury, and even then wasn’t immediately back in the side after sitting out a little bit longer before managing to establish himself as the No 1 again.

And it appears as though fitness issues have reared their head again when it comes to Dubravka whilst on international duty.

The Slovakian recently had to pull out of the squad, but speaking on the latest edition of the Pod On The Tyne podcast, Waugh detailed what the situation was and claimed that it wasn’t as big of a concern on Newcastle United’s front as it may have seemed at first.

He said: “There’s been a bit of confusion, I think, around exactly what is going on with Martin Dubravka. There was some sort of concern, some rumours of angina and an issue in that regard.

“Having spoken to people, the suggestion is that actually, he seems to have had a bit of a virus, he seems to have just been a bit down in that sense and affected physically in that regard. And so Newcastle are gonna assess him this week, and we’ll obviously get more from Eddie Howe on that on Friday.

“But I don’t think it is something that’s necessarily as serious, or at least indications are it’s not necessarily as serious as it seems to have been a little bit lost in translation.”

Based off Waugh’s comments, it seems as if there is nothing major to worry about on the injury front, especially as it doesn’t appear to be something that could cause him to miss a significant amount of time – maybe one game at most.

This is good news for Newcastle because they have built up one of the better defences in the Premier League recently, only conceding seven goals in their last 10 games, so the last thing they want is for the chemistry in the backline to be disrupted.

Because whilst safety might look likely at the moment, it is still not a guarantee, and Newcastle don’t want to have a leaky defence potentially costing them in terms of results and spots in the table.
