George Caulkin has been speaking about PIF’s ambitious plans to build Newcastle United a new training ground on the latest episode of Pod on the Tyne.

Amanda Staveley has openly claimed that Newcastle’s Benton training ground is awful, which will have set off alarm bells in the heads of Newcastle fans – if it hadn’t already – of the severe problems at their club from the Mike Ashley era.

Should Newcastle expand St James' Park?

No!

However, under the new ownership, which has pumped just shy of £90m into the club just on new recruits this season already, fans will be excited to find out that a new training ground is set to be on the horizon, as Caulkin spoke about.

The Athletic journalist revealed that the club’s new owners are looking at potential new sites for a new training ground.

He said: “They also talked about having really good people at the club is a way of getting all those things linked together and of course, a big part of that will come with the training ground, too.

“Mehrdad actually spoke about doing some of that stuff we talked about earlier – sort of improving it when they could, and in the short term, they’ll look at extending it and sort of transforming it and bringing it up to sort of Premier League standard.

“They’re already looking at potential sites, and what they want is somewhere where the first team will be, the academy will be, the women’s team will be, sports science will all be there, they’ll all be on the same site, and getting all those bits of the club talking to each other.”

TIF Thoughts on Newcastle potentially getting a new training ground…

Just a quick watch of the video Newcastle United posted on Twitter of Amanda Staveley and her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi having a walk around the training ground, and it’s easy to tell that the Benton complex needs more than just an upgrade, it needs knocking down and building up.

This is especially true if they are to achieve the owners’ ambitions of winning the Premier League within 10 years, as all top clubs have state-of-the-art training grounds now so they can maximise the time spent away from the pitch, but also allow all aspects of the club to be at one place, as Caulkin spoke about.
