Noted journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided some details surrounding Bruno Fernandes and his future at Manchester United.
The 27-year-old Portuguese playmaker has certainly been a revelation since he moved to Old Trafford in January of 2020, scoring 49 goals and chipping in with 39 assists in just 117 appearances. That production hasn’t stopped this season, either, especially in the league, where his nine goals and six assists have gone a long way to keeping the Red Devils within touching distance of a Champions League spot.
It’s no wonder, then, that Manchester United are so eager to sign him up for a new deal, even though his current one isn’t set to expire until 2025. Romano noted back in July that the club were in the process of sorting out a new one for him and it appears that there has been a breakthrough.
Speaking on a recent video on his YouTube channel, Romano claimed that a new deal was edging closer to being completed between the two parties, before explaining exactly why it was taking them so long for things to get sorted out.
He said: “I wanted to start with Bruno Fernandes because there is an important update. From what I’m told, Manchester United are getting really closer and closer to signing a contract extension with Bruno Fernandes. The agreement is really close.
“Finally, I would say, because it started last July, when Man United made the proposal to Bruno Fernandes, then they had to negotiate, things were going slow because of Manchester United’s problems during the season. We know that they fired Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so they had many things to do during the season. It was not easy to discuss about contracts.
“But now, for Man United, Bruno Fernandes’ contract is getting really, really closer.”
TIF Thoughts on Fabrizio Romano’s comments about Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United…
Is Bruno Fernandes Man Utd's most important player?
Whilst there are a lot of things that need to be worked out at Manchester United right now – the situation regarding the manager, the issues surrounding Paul Pogba and what to do with Cristiano Ronaldo – getting Fernandes signed to a new deal is arguably their biggest priority.
His creativity and attacking prowess are something that Manchester United need to be building around for the future.
If players from other clubs see what he is producing, they, just like Ronaldo when he joined in the summer, might look to Old Trafford as the place to be moving forward and really make the Red Devils serious contenders for trophies next season, whoever the new manager is set to be.
So this update must surely be music to the ears of many Manchester United fans as they look towards what the team might look like next season.
