Leeds United’s Dan James put in a very frustrating performance for Wales as they took one step closer to the World Cup.

With just four goals and four assists in all competitions for Leeds United this season, it’s fair to say that the 24-year-old hasn’t exactly lit up Elland Road this season following his £25m move in the summer.

He might have been looking for a boost in morale and performance with his national side, but whilst they came away with a 2-1 win thanks to two goals from Gareth Bale, James’ performance left a lot to be desired.

Can you remember where Leeds finished in these league seasons? First up: 2018/19

Not only did he have issues in front of goal where he missed not one but two guilt-edge chances that would have put the game to bed for the home side, but on top of that he only managed to complete 60% of his passes, couldn’t make a key pass, didn’t complete a successful dribble, lost seven duels and was disposed 4 times and didn’t make an interception before he was eventually taken off in the final stages to be replaced by Brennan Johnson (WhoScored).

His display on the night earned him a 6/10 from NationalWorld reporter Jordan Jones, who commented that “Plenty of chances for himself to score but couldn’t take them. Frustrating night”, although given how costly those chances could have been you feel that 6 might be a little bit generous.

If James was looking for a display in order to give him a springboard in which to improve his performance at club level, then he didn’t get it at the Cardiff City Stadium, where you feel if he’d have just put away the first, then he might have had the confidence to bag the second.

Let’s just hope that this display doesn’t end up having too big an impact on how he does for Leeds United. The last thing that he needs is to suffer an even bigger drop off in terms of form and for that to affect them as they head into the business end of the season.

They still are not mathematically safe when it comes to relegation, and they may need him to chip in with a few goals between now and May if they are to make sure that they stay well away from the relegation zone.
