Greg O’Keeffe has been speaking on the All Together Now podcast about how Kevin Thelwell landed the director of football role at Everton.

Thelwell was appointed as Everton’s new director of football last month replacing Marcel Brands who departed in December as Everton intended to put their full support behind Rafael Benitez, only to sack him the following month.

Will Everton be relegated?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The name Kevin Thelwell may be familiar for some in England as he spent a prolonged period of time as director of football before being handed a spot on the board with fellow Premier League side Wolves where he oversaw their promotion into the Premier League and signed players such as Ruben Neves, Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota.

O’Keeffe has been speaking about the key reasons as to why Everton appointed Thelwell.

“I’ve always enjoyed kind of going across to the Midlands and being at Wolves and I think that the club there, it’s a very warm family club, you’re treated well, and I think he’s [Thelwell] from what I can hear is very much part of that stable, he’s a gentleman, he’s a straight talker,  straight dealer.

“I think the qualities that I’ve heard, that I think make him the right candidate, or certainly is what has appealed to the Everton board are his soft skills, his people skills, his ability to work across departments and handle different egos and kind of crack on with his job.”

Which of these Serie A stars did the Toffees miss out on?

Hopefully, Thelwell’s appointment can help Everton create a harmonious way of working which has not been the case in recent years with a whole host of players arriving at Goodison Park that have ended up featuring very little due to them not fitting into the manager’s style of play, such as Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and most recently Dele Alli.

Thelwell arrives fresh from working his magic out in the MLS with New York Red Bulls which saw him oversee the club’s 12th consecutive season of qualification for the MLS play-offs and Evertonians will just be praying that Thelwell can work his stuff with Everton as a Premier League club and not a Championship outfit.
