Aston Villa fans will be delighted to see John McGinn score for Scotland during their 2-2 draw against Austria on Tuesday evening.

The midfielder started for the Tartan Army in Vienna and played the full 90 minutes. The Scots were leading 2-0, but goals from Michael Gregoritsch and Alessandro Schopf eventually hauled the hosts back to level terms.

Villa supporters, however, will be particularly interested in McGinn’s strike, which doubled his side’s lead. It was the finishing touch to an impressive move down the left flank, and the hit itself was clinical, leaving Watford’s Daniel Bachmann with no chance between the sticks.

Clearly, the club loved the 27-year-old’s effort, as they took to Twitter to share a video of it.

TIF Thoughts on McGinn’s strike…

This effort was a reminder of exactly what McGinn is capable of in front of goal. While this effort was well-taken, it was not as good as the one the former Hibernian man netted against the same opponents last year, when he directed an instinctive overhead kick into the corner to earn his side a draw.

Since signing for Villa, £27m-valued McGinn has found the back of the net 16 times in 138 matches. He is not a regular goalscorer, therefore, but can pop up when needed. This campaign, he has three Premier League goals to his name, although only one has come in a game which the Villans won.

Which Premier League winner used to play for Villa's academy?

A constant goal threat is perhaps all McGinn is lacking. He has averaged 3.1 tackles per game for Villa this term, with only two players in the Premier League averaging more, while he has also produced 1.4 key passes per outing. Still, with the Midlands outfit having scored at least twice in three of their last five games, it is not something he or Steven Gerrard has to worry about.
