Football journalist Gregg Evans has revealed that Aston Villa have already agreed upon Philippe Coutinho’s wages if he is to join the club on a permanent basis.

During the January transfer market, Villa agreed to take the Barcelona man on loan for the rest of the season. That deal included the option to buy for a reported fee in the region of £33m.

Despite having that fee agreed upon, there has been some speculation regarding how much the player will earn in wages if he is to end up at the club beyond this campaign.

While speaking on the 1874 Aston Villa podcast, Evans said that this amount has actually already been sorted out between player and club.

Will Aston Villa make the top eight this season?

He explained: “Villa have a fee agreed with him if they want to sign him. I think it’s €33m.

“The wages, I’m understood to believe that that’s all sorted as well if they want to get him – you know, they know what they’re going to pay him.

“They’re covering 65-70% of his wages at Barcelona at the moment. So it’s just a decision that they have to make over the next couple of weeks or months now.

“Coutinho has been performing really well for Villa. Johan Lange, Steven Gerrard, Christian Purslow, they’re all pleased with him. Barcelona, of course, we know want to offload him.

“I expect that one will get done unless anything happens between now and the end of the season.”

TIF Thoughts on Philippe Coutinho and Aston Villa…

Since arriving in Birmingham, it’s fair to say the Brazilian has impressed with a number of eye-catching displays. Indeed, on debut, he came off the bench to score against Manchester United, while last weekend he also claimed a goal and an assist against Southampton.

Considering the promising start to life with Villa he has had, it’s no surprise to hear Evans state that Steven Gerrard and co are delighted with the player so far.

With that in mind, they’ll be relieved to already have all the details sorted on a contract if they do decide to sign Coutinho in the summer.
