Aston Villa could be set to hand Steven Gerrard a major transfer budget boost in the summer if Matty Cash is sold.

Cash only joined Villa in the summer of 2020 for around £16m from Championship outfit Nottingham Forest and that already proves to be a shrewd piece of business given he’s now a Premier League regular and a Poland international.

Is Matty Cash worth £40 million?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

While he’s been performing well and regularly for Villa, according to CIES Football Observatory – a company that’s developed a scientific way to measure a player’s transfer market value – Cash’s market value is only as high as £12.5m.

Therefore, with The Sun reporting that Atletico Madrid are willing to pay up to £40m for Cash in the summer, this will surely take the interest of the Villa owners as they’d more than double their money on a short-term investment.

Villa to Cash in?

The Poland international has been in great form this season, having tackled the most players, completed the second-most crosses and recorded three goal involvements, so is easily outperforming his low market value.

While losing someone of Cash’s ability would be a loss for Villa and Gerrard, having a potential £40m boost in their transfer budget would be massive as the boss looks to improve his squad – and it’s likely he’ll be trusted with a decent budget given the top recruits he managed to land in January.

TIF Verdict on Cash potentially being sold for £40m…

According to WhoScored, Cash has been one of Villa’s most consistent performers this season with a 6.9/10 rating, but given how easily and efficiently Gerrard worked in January to replace Matt Targett on the other side of his defence with Lucas Digne, few Villa fans would likely question if he decided to sanction the sale of Cash.

This would be the second major departure from Aston Villa in successive summer windows after the £100m departure of Jack Grealish and Villa have performed perfectly fine without him, so there’s no reason why that could not happen once again without Cash.
