Richard Mennear has claimed on The Roar podcast that it would be a ‘major coup’ if Sunderland appointed Roy Keane as their new manager.

The Black Cats are seemingly desperate to appoint a new first-team manager, with interim coach Mike Dodds having tasted defeat in his two games in charge, but despite Luke Edwards claiming he anticipates a breakthrough this week, no appointment has yet been announced.

Would Roy Keane get Sunderland promoted?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Keane appears to be the outright number-one candidate, with many Sunderland fans dreaming of a reunion that can see them finally get out of League One after four seasons in England’s third tier.

Mennear believes that Sunderland are doing all they can to get Keane as their new manager.

He said: “They will be trying their best to get the best man, or who they think will be the best man, to give them that shot in the arm for the next three and a half, four months.

“Roy Keane would be a major coup, but it’s also a big opportunity for Roy Keane as well, and he wants to get back in and prove himself after 11 years out as a manager.”

TIF Thoughts on Roy Keane to Sunderland…

Keane could just be the fiery rocket Sunderland need in their dressing room as it appears to be lacking in confidence and self-belief, given they’ve crumbled to defeats in their last three league meetings and have one victory in their previous seven matches, but whether or not his approach to management which got the Black Cats promoted in 2007 is good enough for Sunderland now remains to be seen.

Sunderland are set to appoint their fourth permanent manager since dropping into League One and surely this has to be right one as they can ill-afford a fifth season in the lower divisions, so it would be a massive risk employing someone with so little experience as a manager.
