Wolves could be set for a major boost to the side this summer when youngster Connor Ronan returns to the club.

The 23-year-old has certainly been making a name for himself north of the border. He is currently on loan at Scottish Premiership side St. Mirren, where he has so far managed to bag five goals and three assists in his 19 appearances this season.

Along the way, he has also managed to earn himself some major plaudits, with Steven Gerrard praising Ronan when he was in charge of Rangers following a game against his side back in October.

Fitness issues plagued Silvio's career, but where did Wolves sign him from?

On top of that, current manager Jim Goodwin thinks that a call-up to the Republic of Ireland side could very well be on the way following his recent match-winner against Hibernian. He said: “Connor doesn’t score bad goals and that’s another one – in front of the Irish manager as well, so please God, that will do enough to get him in the setup. I’ve been banging the drum long enough.”

So with plenty of promise surrounding Ronan, what could the future hold for him and Wolves if he stakes a first-team claim upon his return?

The heir-apparent to Joao Moutinho?

Having now developed his skills at senior level in the Scottish Premiership, the next step should be for him to make the move to the Wolves side and see what sort of impact he can make there.

Wolves could very well be on the lookout for a replacement for Joao Moutinho in the near future, with the Portuguese midfielder’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

And if Ronan’s abilities are as good as his current manager seems to think they are and that he should be getting international recognition, Wolves may be foolish to not at least try and give him a go in the side this summer to see if he can make the step up.

A chance to save some money for Fosun?

Do you think Wolves will finish in a European spot?

If Ronan does indeed become the replacement for Moutinho, then it could end up being a welcome boost for the club’s owners Fosun International.

Whilst they haven’t necessarily been averse to the idea of spending big in the past, the fact is that in recent times, Wolves have been hit rather hard financially recently, best demonstrated by their rather modest spending this season – at least in comparison to previous seasons.

So if Ronan does indeed manage to make the step up and replace Moutinho, it could save them and Bruno Lage from having to splash out on a replacement for him, and use the money on other areas of the squad instead.
