Wolves journalist Liam Keen has given his thoughts on Morgan Gibbs-White and his future at the club when he returns on loan.

Having come through the academy at Molineux, playing time for the senior side has been sporadic to say the least, as he’s only been able to make 86 appearances for the side since making his debut back in 2017, and whilst that does include 46 appearances in the Premier League, only 10 of them were starts.

Which striker played for Wolves' academy?

As a result, he has been sent out on loan in the past two seasons to Swansea City and Sheffield United in the Championship to aid his development. His spell with the latter is going incredibly well as he’s managed to rack up seven goals and five assists so far for the Blades.

But what the club will do with him next season in what will be the penultimate year of his contract is up in the air.

Speaking on the latest edition of the E&S Wolves podcast when asked by host Nathan Judah whether the club should keep or sell the 22-year-old, Keen discussed what he felt the club’s decision would be.

He stated that Wolves boss Bruno Lage and his actions in the past might offer some insight into how the club will treat Gibbs-White and that he ultimately felt the club would hold onto him this summer.

Keen said: “It is a tough one. I edge towards keep, because I don’t think he’s really had a sustained season in the Premier League where he’s had a real opportunity. And I think under Bruno, his system could work.

“Bruno wanted to keep him, let’s not forget that – he wanted to keep him originally when he went out on loan in the summer. So yeah, I would edge towards keep.”

Can Gibbs-White become a regular starter?

Given how well he’s done this season with the Blades, it seems as if Gibbs-White has done well enough to earn himself a shot in the Premier League next season, as he has done what he was meant to do in the Championship – play a lot of minutes and impress.

However, the only issue is whether that playing time in the Premier League will ultimately come with Wolves or with another team.

As Keen hints at, the fact Lage appears to rate him might see the midfielder stay in the Black Country for next season, but given how Wolves are doing quite well enough without him as they currently sit 7th in the table, he might not be able to get into the team.

Obviously, if Wolves move some players out – with Joao Moutinho approaching the end of his contract and Ruben Neves being scouted by other Premier League clubs – that might open some doors open for him. But as things stand, the route into the first team isn’t as straightforward as it might appear.
