Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly showing an interest in signing Dutch defender Sven Botman, and it could end up having a big impact on two figures at the club.

Botman, who has been branded by The Athletic as a ‘rising defensive star’, has been a sought-after man in world football in recent months.

Last summer, there were claims that Wolves and Sevilla were interested in him, whilst clubs like Newcastle United and Milan were taking a keen interest in him during the recent January transfer window.

However, it appears you can now throw Tottenham’s name into the mix, as reports in Italy are suggesting that they are likely to be included in any negotiations for him this coming summer transfer window.

But what could Botman turning up at Spurs mean for the club?

A statement of intent from Daniel Levy

Reports ahead of the January window had suggested that it would cost roughly £40m and above in order to get Botman’s current club Lille to agree to sell him on.

Given Daniel Levy’s well-known reputation when it comes to finances and his caution when it comes to overspending, if Spurs were to get this deal done, it would represent a pretty big moment for Levy during his time in charge at the club.

The fact that he would be willing to not only sign a big up-and-coming name in world football, but part with a substantial fee to make it happen – combined with his refusal to sell Harry Kane last summer – might well send a signal that Tottenham really mean business and are getting ready for a proper charge at silverware in the coming years.

The end of the Road-on?

However, with one man coming in, it could well mean that one member of the Tottenham squad will have to leave, and Joe Rodon is arguably the most likely candidate to make way if that does happen.

It’s fair to say that the Welshman’s time in north London has been underwhelming, with just 22 appearances made since his signing in October 2020, with both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte seemingly not too keen on making him part of their first-team plans.

So if the club need to make way for Botman in the defensive department – especially if his departure would help raise the funds necessary to complete the deal – Rodon could very well be granted the opportunity to end his spell at the club.
