Journalist Michael Bridge believes that Ryan Sessegnon looked scared when playing for Spurs following the midweek defeat in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old promised so much when he joined from Fulham, after he made his debut for the Cottagers at just 16 years old and went on to make 30 appearances, scoring seven goals in the 2016/17 Championship campaign.

Sessegnon has only featured eight times in the Premier League this season, despite missing large chunks of the season through injury.

Speaking prior to Spurs’ clash with Leeds United, Bridge told GiveMeSport that something is holding the 21-year-old back when playing for Spurs.

He said: “To me, he looks scared. I don’t know whether he’s scared about getting injured, but something is holding him back. Is it a tactical discipline? I don’t know.”

TIF Thoughts on Ryan Sessegnon…

Sessegnon has missed a total of 20 games through injury for Spurs since joining back in the summer of 2020, so you could perhaps understand why he may be scared.

Since making the jump to the Premier League, Sessegnon has struggled to find the form he had in the Championship that earned him his move.

Indeed, Sessegnon is a natural left-midfielder, where his main priority is attacking and creating chances, but this hasn’t been the case at Spurs.

Under current boss Antonio Conte, they often play a back three meaning that when Sessegnon has played, he has found himself at left wing-back.

Although a lot of his time in west London was spent on the left side of defence, it could be argued that the physical demands of the top flight of English football are a major factor as to why things haven’t worked out for the former Fulham man.
