Tottenham Hotspur reporter Alasdair Gold has questioned defender Sergio Reguilon following their recent defeat on Wednesday night.

Speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, the reliable journalist shared his doubts over the Spanish full-back, who is now one and a half years into his Spurs career.

Has Reguilon been a flop at Spurs?

No

Under Antonio Conte, the 25-year-old has taken a more advanced role by playing as a left wing-back, but has not exactly proven to be a reliable member of the squad in attack.

Reguilon had a huge chance to open the scoring on Wednesday night in the first half but ultimately fluffed his lines as he bore down on Fraser Forster inside the box.

And Gold shared his frustrations with the defender, who Spurs bought in 2020 for a fee believed to be in the region of £27m from Real Madrid.

He said: “Sergio Reguilon had a huge chance at the start of the game. I think was it Son to Kane, and then Kane played it right across the box – completely unmarked, Reguilon.

And I don’t know if it was yourself [Rob Guest] said this or another reporter: you don’t trust Reguilon in those moments, you don’t almost expect him to score.

“He gets into some good areas, and he does what I think Emerson [Royal] still needs to do the other side, is to be on the other side of the box when the ball comes in from the other side. But, I don’t ever trust that he’s going to put the ball in the net.”

TIF Thoughts on Reguilon…

We really do feel the wing-backs are a huge area for improvement in the coming transfer window, with neither Reguilon nor Emerson Royal proving a reliable provider of assists.

Reguilon has played higher up the field under Conte, yet he has only been able to provide one assist as a left wing-back, while he notched two assists in the league under Nuno Espirito Santo (via Transfermarkt).

The Spaniard grabbed his first goal in a Spurs shirt earlier this season, however, the chance he missed on Wednesday was huge. Regardless of their position, Conte would have expected his player to find the back of the net in that situation.

With just 35% of the 25-year-old’s crosses finding players in Spurs shirts this term, we think Reguilon needs to step up his game to live up to the £27m price tag.
