Reliable journalist Alasdair Gold has shed some light on a heated moment on Wednesday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium between Davinson Sanchez and Harry Winks.

The Spurs correspondent was speaking on the latest Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast following the game against Southampton on Wednesday, which saw Spurs drop the points late on.

Do you think Spurs will get top four?

Yes

Yes

No

No

It was a night to forget for the Lilywhites, who saw their 2-1 lead slip with just over 10 minutes left, and it seems there was an off-the-ball moment that left the fans furious.

Gold claimed Winks’ frustrations got the better of him after the Colombian centre-back failed to close down one of the visiting players.

And on what was a frustrating night for all involved with Spurs, Gold had the following to say on the reaction the incident caused in the stands among the Tottenham fans:

“I watched him, he had a proper go Davinson Sanchez for not closing down one shot from the edge of the box. Davinson kind of came out with his arms behind his back doing that classic, ‘I’m going to turn and not give away a penalty’ and Winks absolutely laid into him.

“But rather than respecting what perhaps was constructive criticism, Sanchez absolutely gave it back to Winks and presumably was saying, ‘well, where were you, why were you not tracking him?’ I mean, that may have been what he was saying.

“And that kind of created this weird moment where the fans actually started to get quite annoyed that two of their own players were arguing with each other. It was like, just come on, get on with it.”

TIF Thoughts on Tottenham’s top-four hopes…

It was a hugely underwhelming display from Spurs, who were presented with a great opportunity to close the gap on West Ham United, who had picked up all three points on Tuesday night.

And further insult to injury was added when Arsenal beat Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday night to see Spurs slip to four points off the top-four race.

Up next for Spurs is a game against Bruno Lage’s men, with Wolves looking to refind their feet having lost two in a row against Norwich City and now the Gunners.

Both sides have a lot lying on Sunday’s game with the pair eyeing the Champions League spots, however, with a game against Manchester City next for Spurs, this feels like a must-win game on Sunday.

Perhaps this is why tensions were running high against Southampton, and may be a positive sign of the passion players like Winks and Sanchez are desperate to show when things are going against them.
