Tottenham Hotspur journalist Alasdair Gold has been speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast to discuss the latest injury news regarding midfielder Oliver Skipp.

The young central midfielder has not featured for Tottenham since their return from the short break in domestic action having suffered a groin strain (via Transfermarkt).

Would you start Skipp on Sunday if fit?

No

Skipp has played a big part in Tottenham’s 2021/22 campaign having returned from his season-long loan spell at Norwich City, with 18 Premier League appearances to his name,

And it is apparent that Antonio Conte has been left impressed by what he has seen from the 21-year-old, with the Italian hailing the midfielder as an important member of his side.

After a disappointing defeat against Southampton on Wednesday night, Spurs return to action on Sunday against Wolverhampton Wanderers – and Gold had the following update to provide on Skipp:

“It’s a funny one, he had a groin injury, which I then think he got a bit of an infection during the rehab, and it’s kind of complicated it slightly, but he’s almost back.

“I asked about Skippy and he [Conte] was like, he kind of admitted he’s pushing the medical department to try and get him back sooner than the two weeks they’ve said. He’s like, I want it to be a maximum of 7-10 days because he’s an important player for me.”

TIF Thoughts on Skipp’s importance…

The game against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints side was a big example of how Conte’s midfield has missed their young midfielder, with a lack of defensive ability on display from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Winks.

Between the midfield pair, only one tackle was recorded (by Winks), while Hojbjerg was hooked off the pitch after 60 minutes by Conte for Rodrigo Bentancur.

Having seen Arsenal and West Ham United pick up points during the week, the game against Wolves at the weekend feels like a game Spurs simply cannot afford to lose.

And with Conte ‘pushing‘ the Spurs medical department to return Skipp to his side, we will be interested to see the Tottenham starting XI on Sunday.
