Tottenham Hotspur reporter Alasdair Gold has claimed Oliver Skipp is viewed inside the club as a future captain in north London.

The Spurs correspondent was speaking on the latest episode of the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast following a disappointing midweek result for the Lilywhites.

Will Skipp become a Spurs captain one day?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Spurs have been without the 21-year-old midfielder for a number of weeks now after he sustained a groin injury, which meant Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Winks made up Antonio Conte’s midfield on Wednesday.

However, with neither of the experienced midfielders impressing against Southampton, the Italian manager even hailed the importance of having Skipp in his side.

And Gold shared Conte’s enthusiasm for the young midfielder, revealing an interesting detail from what he had heard from people within the club when talking about leaders on the field.

He said: “I think Skippy could become that one day. I think it’s far too early to suggest he can be now, but obviously, there’s a feeling within the club he will one day become a Spurs captain and [Jose] Mourinho, you know, very publicly said that as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Skipp as captain…

The youngster has played a big role in the Tottenham side since returning from his season-long loan spell away with Norwich City last campaign.

Current skipper Hugo Lloris has confirmed his future with Spurs for the next two seasons with his recent contract extension, so becoming a Spurs captain could still be a couple of years away for Skipp.

However, that will give the 21-year-old plenty of time to build up some further experience under Conte, as well as the likes of Lloris and current vice-captain Harry Kane.

The 28-year-old striker’s future has been under speculation in recent months, so it could be a realistic scenario that Spurs find themselves looking for a new captain in the near future.
