Tottenham Hotspur may soon have to rely on the quality of their new signings, with a few first-team players out with injury.

Indeed, as reported by football.london, the likes of Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, and Oliver Skipp will all miss tonight’s Premier League clash against Southampton.

Manager Antonio Conte said: “No news. Eric Dier is not available and it’s the same for Skipp and Tanganga. The others are all available.”

While this spells bad news for the aforementioned trio, it could open up a door of opportunity for defender Cristian Romero – who was signed in the summer – as well as January transfer recruit Rodrigo Bentancur…

Romero set to shine

Romero arrived from Atalanta on a season-long loan deal with an option of a €55m (£46.7m) permanent deal. Since then, however, his time at the club has been marred by injury.

Indeed, a hamstring injury has meant he hasn’t played a league game since the first week of November. He did, though, make his return in the FA Cup win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend and seemed to impress during that display.

Usually, a player may be eased back into action after a long spell on the sidelines, but with Dier and Tanganga out – and having just played so well on his return – it looks as though the stage is set for Romero to star against the Saints.

Bentancur boost

Arriving on Deadline Day with then-Juventus teammate Dejan Kulusevski, Bentancur could cost Spurs as much as £21.5m, including add-ons.

He has already made an impact on manager Conte, though, wowing him after coming off the bench against the Seagulls for his debut (as per football.london).

Much like Romero, in normal circumstances, it might be a little too soon to ask the player to start against Southampton at the weekend. But with Skipp out, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Winks remain the only other central midfield options.

With that in mind, Bentancur’s chances of starting have certainly received a huge boost and this could see him stake a claim for a long-term place in the Spurs XI.
