Newcastle United were keen to strengthen their central defensive options in the January window and had to settle for boyhood Magpie Dan Burn after attempts to sign Diego Carlos and Sven Botman ended in defeat.

Despite the midseason setbacks in the transfer window, Newcastle are still keen on Botman and have continued to scout him.

You’d imagine a summer deal would be easier to execute, should they stay up, as the position of the Magpies will be much clearer to potential new recruits.

Will Newcastle sign Botman?

Jamal Lascelles at threat?

Newcastle United’s signing of Kieran Trippier has already led to reports that Jamal Lascelles’ time as captain could be up. Should they sign someone to play his position, it could signal the beginning of the end for the centre half as a first team regular.

WhoScored.com even say he is ‘very weak’ in terms of concentration and ‘weak’ when it comes to tackling and passing. Far from ideal for a Premier League centre back.

Botman on the other hand has ‘strong’ concentration. He is also deemed ‘weak’ at tackling, but makes double the amount of tackles a game on average than Lascelles.

The 206-game ace could finally be dropped from the team by Eddie Howe.

More exciting that Bruno Guimaraes signing?

Liverpool have shown serious interest in the Dutch centre half in recent years, with other top clubs also sniffing around.

AC Milan are also reported to be interested in Botman. They are currently leading Serie A, highlighting the level of club interested in acquiring his services.

Should Newcastle beat top teams such as AC Milan to the signing of Botman, it’ll show serious intent from the new owners. It would also show other potential signings that Newcastle are serious and can beat top clubs to signings.

Lee Ryder noted his performance recently, stopping Metz having a shot on target and he had 108 touches in controlling the game.

And, former Lille manager, Christophe Galtier, said of him: “In football, you have leaders who are vocal, ones who gesticulate and ones who shake the team up… I have a few of those. But you also have people who lead by example, through their performances, and it’s true that Sven is emerging as this type of leader.”
