Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has been discussing Kieran Trippier’s injury and a possible return date.

The England defender has certainly made a pretty big impact at St. James’ Park since his arrival in the January transfer window. He currently leads the team in tackles and interceptions per game as well as crosses, whilst also ranking third in terms of key passes made per game (via WhoScored).

And he had arguably his biggest moment in a black and white shirt as he scored the winner against Aston Villa this past weekend to give Eddie Howe’s men a big boost in their hopes of staying in the Premier League.

However, the joy was short-lived as he suffered a broken foot later in the game and will need to undergo surgery to repair it, with no official timeframe set for when he is due to come back.

Speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters, Kennedy revealed what he had heard with regards to the injury and when he felt it would be possible for the defender to come back into the side.

He said: “Look, let’s not beat around the bush here. The type of injury that it is, I hear some people suggesting six weeks, I think it’s going to be a bit longer than that. From what I’ve heard from sort of medical opinion, it sounds like it’s going to take a little bit longer. And it could be the case that we don’t see a lot more of Kieran Trippier this season.”

Judging by Kennedy’s comments, it sounds as if Trippier’s impact between now and the end of the season could be minimal, but that he could still play some part. Whilst this sounds bad, as long as he is able to make some appearances for Newcastle, it should be seen as a major positive.

We’ve seen the impact that Trippier has made in his few appearances so far, and even if he’s not 100% if he comes back for the run-in, the impact he can have on a game is so big that he could still play a vital part in helping Newcastle secure their status in the Premier League.

Provided that Newcastle are in with a shout of staying up, you feel that the club will take the risk of playing him in the final few games, simply because his impact is something that they cannot do without in their quest to stay up.
