Newcastle United’s January transfer window was a hectic one for sure. The Magpies saw Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn join the club as Eddie Howe looks to steer the North East giants to safety this season.

Although some superb business was done when you consider Trippier left Champions League football to join and Guimaraes was also a target for Arsenal, some other business could be seen as underwhelming, such as the signing of Chris Wood who only has three goals to his name all season – not the record you’re after in a relegation scrap.

Dan Burn from Brighton is a long stretch from the original target of Diego Carlos too.

Talking on The Transfer Window podcast, Ian McGarry gave his thoughts: “Of course, we’ve reported on the Transfer Window Podcast that the new owners made a decision not to be extravagant in the January window, but then panicked because of the club’s position in the Premier League and so have invested heavily in the hope that they will maintain their Premier League status.”

TIF thoughts on McGarry claim…

Panic is probably a bit harsh on the owners. They had to turn their attentions to back up options after being rejected by their primary targets such as Diego Carlos.
