Journalist Dean Jones believes that Joe Gomez could be a player that Newcastle will look to bring into the club in the summer.

After the Magpies became rich through their Saudi takeover, they have been linked with several players across Europe, especially those from Champions League clubs.

Gomez made a return from injury in recent weeks against Norwich, but with the introduction of Ibrahima Konate, he may face little game-time if he was to stay at Anfield.

Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT, “I think when names like Pogba get thrown around, and then you’re also seeing Joe Gomez, you’re like, ‘Well, that seems much more sensible. And from what we’ve seen so far, a much more likely route that they go down.”

Partner for Dan Burn?

Newcastle signed Dan Burn from Brighton for a figure of £13million, and he has impressed so far at St James’s Park – he has an average player rating of 7.1 in February, according to Sofascore.

The issue lies with a partner for the 29-year-old, and Joe Gomez could be the perfect fit next to the 6 ft 6 giant. Gomez is a defender who doesn’t dive into challenges, according to Whoscored, and uses his pace to make good recovery runs.

With Burn a defender who likes to tackle and gets stuck into battles, having the pacier and more mobile defender in Gomez could compliment each other.

Replacement for Jamal Lascelles?

Jamal Lascelles is the current club captain for Newcastle but has come under scrutiny at times for the Magpies by the Newcastle faithful – he’s been labeled as ‘poor‘ and ‘terrible‘ by the fans in the past.

With the January signings of Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn at the back in January, Newcastle could be set for a solid defensive unit if they acquire a few more players in the summer.

Gomez is just 24-years-old and has shown potential so can certainly improve and become a solid player. With Lascelles considerably older than him, Eddie Howe could further freshen up his back-line and find a long-term successor and upgrade on the defender.

The £22.5m-rated Gomez, who has won a Champions League in his time at Liverpool, could be a superb signing.
