Phil Hay has revealed the true reason why Crysencio Summerville didn’t leave Leeds United last month.

Leeds saw just one player depart in January, and that was Cody Drameh, who was reportedly desperate for first-team football and was granted a loan spell away until the end of the season, despite Marcelo Bielsa wanting him to stay at the club.

This move appeared to trigger something with fellow fringe youngster Summerville as rumours over his own future emerged, with 2. Bundesliga side Hamburg interested in signing him up until the end of the season, but there was one thing that halted any sort of move from materialising.

Hay has revealed on The Phil Hay Show that Summerville must not have pushed hard enough for a move, which is why he remains at Elland Road, unlike Drameh.

“I suspect he would like to go and get games, but my reading of it is that on the basis that he’s still here, he hasn’t done what Drameh has done – which is basically say, ‘I want to take this move, I want to be out of here and I want to go’, which is why Drameh went to Cardiff.”

TIF Thoughts on Crysencio Summerville…

The Dutch winger is still well and truly in the development stage of his career at just 20 years of age, so consistent game time is what he needs right now, but with Leeds’ unwillingness or inability to land sufficient cover, Summerville has had to remain at Leeds.

Summerville has been named in 16 Premier League matchday squads this season, but that has seen him handed just 118 minutes of football. So while staying means he can provide backup and cover for the likes of Jack Harrison, Daniel James and Raphinha, it could halt his growth and development in the long term if he spends too much time on the bench.
