Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson’s estimated value has dropped to around half the amount the Villans bought him for – despite only arriving in the Premier League a year ago.

In the 2021 January transfer market, Villa paid Marseille a reported fee of £16m to acquire the Frenchman, who hoped to compete for a regular spot in the team with John McGinn and loanee at the time, Ross Barkley.

However, now just over a year down the line, the 27-year-old has had a limited impact on the team – featuring in just 15 Premier League games since, without scoring or claiming an assist.

It looks as though this lack of form has caused his transfer value to completely drop off, with the CIES Football Observatory – a website that has developed a powerful econometric approach to assess the transfer value of professional footballers on a scientific basis – stating that he is now worth between €7m-10m (which is less than £8.5m).

Will Morgan Sanson ever come good for Aston Villa?

The former Ligue 1 man has started just two league games all season and doesn’t look likely to break into Steven Gerrard’s midfield any time soon.

Despite only being in England for a brief spell so far, his future is already subject to debate. Indeed, as reported by GiveMeSport, journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Villa’s hunt for a new midfielder leaves plenty of doubt over Sanson’s chances.

He said: “It’s going to be an interesting summer ahead for Sanson if he’s not able to break into the team between now and the end of the season.

“There will be serious question marks over his long-term future if Villa do bring in another midfielder, which I would fully expect them to do.”

One player who certainly seems to be a target for the Villans is Brighton and Hove Albion star Yves Bissouma. The Telegraph recently explained that the club are likely to go back in for the 25-year-old this summer, having already had a £25 million bid rejected this winter.

It’s easy to see how all this could see Sanson pushed out the back door soon enough. If he is, though, Villa don’t look set to make anything close to a profit on their man.
