Joe Nicholson has been speaking on The Roar podcast about how Sunderland could still bring in some new faces.

The Black Cats are currently in a major slump, having won once in their last eight matches and brought in Alex Neil to turn their fortunes around, however, a disappointing draw away to AFC Wimbledon was not what he would’ve wanted.

Will Alex Neil get Sunderland promoted?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Sunderland currently have a number of players out injured, which will not help Neil’s situation at the Stadium of Light, and this could see them try and bring in some free agent signings before the end of the season.

Nicholson has revealed that new signings could arrive because of the club’s injury concerns.

He said: “It’s a very difficult one [free-agent signings], it is something that Sunderland are looking at particularly in defence. Letting Tom Flanagan go, we said at the time, was quite a big gamble and it looks like that could come back to bite them because Danny Batth was out with an ankle injury on Saturday, so they were down to Bailey Wright and Callum Doyle.

“If anything happened to them, they’re down to Arbenit Xhemajli, who’s hardly played any football and has been out with a long-term knee injury.”

TIF Thoughts on Sunderland’s situation…

Prior to Neil arriving on Wearside, the club managed to bring in a free-agent signing in the form of Jermain Defoe, however, he’s yet to start a game for Sunderland and has amassed just 55 minutes of first-team action in League One.

This shows that while the idea of bringing in new players outside of the transfer window sounds good on paper as the squad get a lift and potentially some more quality, these players will be free agents for a reason and also may not have played any football for months, thus requiring a long time to get up to speed, whereas Sunderland need results and performances from players right now.
