Journalist Joe Nicholson has dropped a positive update on injured Sunderland forward Nathan Broadhead while speaking on The Roar podcast.

Broadhead, who is currently on loan at the Stadium of Light, limped off during the club’s Carabao Cup clash against Arsenal in December while he was in fine form having netted five goals in his previous five league games – and there were fears he could be out for the rest of the season.

However, just as Sunderland find themselves in some very rocky form, according to Nicholson, the striker could be set to hand new boss Alex Neil a welcome and timely boost to his frontline options, with the team scoring just seven goals in their previous eight league matches.

Nicholson claims it’s a matter of weeks until the striker should return from his hamstring injury.

He said: “Thankfully, I don’t think Nathan Broadhead’s too far away, maybe a couple of weeks, so I think that would be a big boost to have him back in the frame and he can also maybe go out into one of the wide positions.

“Whether he’s going to be the same player that was in great form around December time, it may take a couple of weeks for him to get back up to speed with that hamstring injury.”

TIF Thoughts on Broadhead…

The 23-year old striker was looking to be a shrewd piece of business done by Sunderland over the summer as he added youth, energy and willingness to prove himself in the lower leagues alongside the more experienced Ross Stewart.

Sunderland have seen their automatic promotion hopes diminish in the blink of an eye, with the Black Cats earning one win in their previous seven league matches and finding themselves outside of the play-offs with no games in hand on the teams above them, so the return of some fresh legs and energy in the form of Broadhead could be exactly what they need to get their season back on track.
