Richard Mennear has been speaking on The Roar podcast about how he doesn’t think Jonathan Woodgate would be a good fit for Sunderland.

Following the sacking of Lee Johnson on Sunday, it’s now being reported by Craig Hope that both Grant McCann and Roy Keane have been interviewed by Sunderland over the vacant managerial role.

Would Roy Keane get Sunderland promoted?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

McCann is freshly out of work having been dismissed by Hull City’s new owners despite having just recorded back-to-back wins, while Keane is being heavily linked down to his established ties with the club from his first stint.

However, former Newcastle United player and Middlesbrough manager Woodgate has also been tipped for the job, and following a discussion of Keane’s credentials, Mennear claimed fans would not like to see the Sunderland board opt for an ex-Toon player if the Irishman is overlooked.

He said: “You then compare him to the other options, I suppose what are the other options for Sunderland at the minute – Grant McCann, Neil Warnock, obviously Woodgate was linked, but I don’t think that would go down particularly well with the fanbase.”

TIF Thoughts on the Sunderland job…

While Woodgate and McCann would arrive with recent experience managing in the Football League, Keane is seemingly still the number-one candidate that Sunderland want, with their owners appearing to give the club an emotional push following the arrival of Jermain Defoe being confirmed earlier this week.

McCann would appear to be the sensible and reliable option given he got Hull out of League One as champions last season and was seemingly just starting to get their season back on track in the Championship before being sacked, however, the potential of Keane returning to Wearside could be too good to ignore.
