Football journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones has been speaking on the latest edition of Touchline Talk to discuss Newcastle United’s pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes.

According to reports, the Magpies are closing in on the signing of the Lyon midfielder this month having agreed on a fee believed to be in the region of £30m.

However, Jones has provided fans with an interesting take on the murmurs he had heard from those around the player, who has also been linked to the likes of Arsenal.

There have been some mixed reports on the proposed deal for the 24-year-old, with Lyon denying the rumours of a deal being agreed.

And Jones has claimed those around the player are trying to slow down the rumours with the potential hope of a bigger club making their move off the back of Newcastle’s reported bid.

He said: “We’re seeing a lot of tweets and reports right now going around about Bruno being close to being confirmed as a Newcastle player. But all of a sudden, sources close to the player are trying to reach out to people and say ‘hang on, hold fire a little bit, this isn’t completed yet. There’s still some work to be done’.

“Now, part of that is probably in terms of personal terms. But also, part of me wonders if it means that they are waiting for other clubs to step in here, because we know particularly Arsenal have been very interested in the player.”

TIF Thoughts on Bruno Guimaraes to NUFC…

Guimaraes is a player who has also been linked to interest from Atletico Madrid, which was partly why we found the reports to emerge on Wednesday of Newcastle’s bid so surprising.

With a midfield currently consisting of Jonjo Shelvey and Joelinton, we think Guimaraes would bring a new lease of quality to Eddie Howe’s midfield.

The Brazilian has been able to provide four assists this campaign from a deep-lying midfield position, which is more than what any Newcastle player has managed this season.

However, given the quality of this player, we feel the Magpies will be hoping to get this deal over the line as quickly as possible in the fear of the likes of Arsenal attempting to hijack the deal.
