Celtic survived a late scare to book their place in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup thanks to a dominant first half display. The fans weren’t 100% happy however, chastising Stephen Welsh for his performance.

Giorgos Giakoumakis and Liel Abada found the back of the net to ensure Ange Postecoglou’s side took a healthy lead into the interval. Conor Sammon provided a lifeline for Alloa and some late tension for the Hoops. Thankfully for the Scottish giants, they could see the game out to progress 2-1 winners.

After what looked like a routine win turned to be a bit twitchy, the Celtic fans got a bit nervous on social media, especially with the performance of Welsh. The central defender was slammed on Twitter for his showing.

What the Celtic fans said

“Stephen Welsh is a liability game after game. Constantly loses his man.” @mark_mccairn

“Stephen Welsh – It stinks.” @SemtexFarmhand

“Embarrassing from Stephen Welsh, that’s Sunday league football defensive awareness.” @GlasgowFIFA_

“Extremely poor from Stephen Welsh.” @gigpod

“He’s a central defender who’s poor in the air, as is Welsh, 2nd best all night to basic high balls to Salmon.” @thebigbhuna

“Welsh struggles in the air at times, seen it for the goal last night.” @Jimmilaw

It’s clear to see the frustrations from the Celtic supporters with Welsh. He’s far from a regular in the starting team though, so it’s not the easiest to just play flawless or even solid football when you’re used sporadically.

Which forward played for Celtic's academy?

This season he’s racked up 20 appearances, but you can see they’re not consistent. However, he’s still only 22 so has plenty of time on his side to develop into a key player for the Hoops.
