Over the weekend Tottenham Hotspur had a scare in the FA Cup when they went 1-0 down to Morecambe, with Spurs fielding Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga from the start – two players who have not featured heavily under Conte.
Who would be a better signing for Spurs?
A key player missing on Sunday was Dier, who Conte has claimed could become one of the best defenders in the world, but Thomlinson believes that Bayern Munich defender Sule, who is out of contract in the summer, may well hand Dier a tough battle to keep his spot, if Conte decides to move for the defender who apparently wanted to join the club when he was 18 years old.
Speaking on the latest episode of Sunday Vibes, Thomlinson believes that Sule would be a good replacement for Dier.
“I think Niklas Sule at Tottenham as a sort of Eric Dier upgrade as the centre of the back three, with two slightly more athletic players alongside him – be it a [Cristian] Romero and a Tanganga or a [Davinson] Sanchez – I think that suits him a little bit more, where he can be that sort of distributor, aerially dominant centre-back, because he is such a huge bloke.
“I don’t think you want him playing in one of those two channel roles where he’s going to have to cover wing-backs. That’s probably more suited to a Romero more suited to a Tanganga, so I think it would be a real coup.”
TIF Thoughts on Sule potentially replacing Dier…
It would be a huge swing of feelings towards Dier if someone, even of Sule’s pedigree, was to come in and push him to the bench, especially given Conte’s recent comments about the defender and that he’s played 90 minutes in every league game under the Italian this season.
While Sule would bring a winning mentality from his time at Bayern Munich and is a regular there – so he clearly has something about him – Conte seemingly admires Dier, and having been at the club for a long time, the Englishman would likely have a vocal presence in the dressing room, so it would be a big call to potentially shake it up.
