Sky Sports journalist Vinny O’Connor has been speaking on Good Morning Transfers about where Everton stand on their pursuit of Roberto Martinez.

Everton’s managerial situation is a quickly changing one with the Toffees having now appointed Duncan Ferguson as temporary boss, while according to The Telegraph, they have already lined up interviews with Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney.

Would Martinez improve Everton?

The Toffees have also launched an attempt to land Martinez, who is currently working with the Belgium national side, although it does appear unlikely he will be allowed to leave given it’s a World Cup year, despite the former Everton manager reportedly open to a return.

O’Connor had this to say on Martinez’s stance on a return to Everton:

“Martinez was the Everton board’s number-one choice back in the summer before they appointed Rafa Benitez, and we understand that Martinez himself would welcome a return to the club, which he has a huge affinity with as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Roberto Martinez to Everton…

It would certainly prove to be a bizarre and unexpected turn of events for Everton to appoint Martinez given that Farhad Moshiri sacked him back in 2016, but also because the Belgium FA would be scrambling around to find a new manager to lead them into this year’s World Cup.

Whereas, bringing in someone like Rooney to work alongside club legends such as Ferguson and Leighton Baines, who all have emotional and close ties with the club and fans would be one way to galvanise a fanbase that was certainly broken following the appointment of Benitez.
