Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the Newcastle Fans TV YouTube channel to discuss the latest in Newcastle United’s transfer business.

The Italian has claimed that the Toon’s owners are hoping to bring in a new centre-back by Wednesday after another poor defensive display at the weekend.

Should Lascelles still be starting for NUFC?

The Magpies saw a huge three points slip away from them on Saturday at the hands of Watford, with Joao Pedro beating Jamaal Lascelles in the air to snatch a point for the Hornets.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with a number of centre-backs so far this month, and it is believed negotiations are ongoing for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.

With around two weeks remaining of the January window, Romano had the following update to provide when it came to Newcastle’s search for a new defender:

“At the moment, the focus is on new signings because they need to have new faces, new players and in particular in the defence.

“So I’m told [that the] board, they’re working to have the new centre-back in maybe Wednesday or Thursday, but they want to have him as soon as possible. So I’m sure that Monday/Tuesday will be really busy with the new signings and then outgoings maybe in the final week of the window, they will have some sort of opportunity on this point.”

Defensive errors once again cost Newcastle the points at the weekend after they conceded a soft goal with just a matter of minutes left of the game.

Three points would have been huge for the Toon, as not only did it allow Watford to retain their gap on Eddie Howe’s side, but it also allowed Norwich City to leapfrog the Magpies in the table after the Canaries’ victory over Everton.

After just 20 games, Newcastle have already conceded 43 goals in the Premier League, and unless they can shore things up at the back over the remainder of the season, we find it difficult to see the north-east club keeping their top-flight status.

Next up for the Toon is Leeds United next weekend, and with the Whites having put three past West Ham United last time out, now could be a good time for Newcastle to bring in defensive support.
