Football journalist Dean Jones has been speaking on the latest episode of Touchline Talk to discuss the latest transfer news regarding Newcastle United.

The Toon have added two new faces to their squad this month, with Kieran Trippier’s signing followed up by the addition of Chris Wood.

Do you expect a new arrival before the weekend?

And with their first Premier League game in over two weeks on the horizon as Claudio Ranieri’s Watford visit St. James’ Park on Saturday, Jones believes the Toon are pushing for another new face.

Eddie Howe’s side find themselves slumped in 19th spot, but three points against the Hornets could pull them out of the bottom three, with Watford just two points ahead in 17th spot.

With Ranieri’s side making the trip to Tyneside on Saturday, Jones had a promising transfer claim to make on the Toon’s search for another addition.

He said: “I wouldn’t rule out there being another new signing at Newcastle before the weekend. They really do hope that that could be the case, and a centre-back is definitely a priority now with these two through the door.

“The reason they’ve gone for Trippier and Wood straight off the bat is because they’re looking for experienced players who were available.”

TIF Thoughts on NUFC’s transfer window…

We have been fairly impressed with the two additions Newcastle have made already, with Wood potentially a smart acquisition in their bid for survival.

Not only does the striker weaken their relegation rivals Burnley, but the 30-year-old has netted double figures in all of his full Premier League campaigns, which would certainly be a boost for the Toon with Callum Wilson injured.

However, we still feel they need to act quickly on finding a centre-back of real quality, with their defensive record being their biggest weakness so far this season.

If they could bring in a centre-back before the game on Saturday, not only do we think it should improve the quality of Howe’s starting XI, but it would surely provide the fans with a huge boost ahead of the game.
