Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has been discussing a potential swoop from Newcastle United for Sven Botman on his Here We Go podcast

The Toon Army have reportedly had a bid rejected for the 21-year-old midfielder which is believed to be in the region of €35m (£29.2m), however, Romano believes the Magpies may go back in for the defender.

Is Botman more important than a new striker?

Yes

Yes

No

No

Botman has received a lot of reported interest from AC Milan, too. The Dutchman is believed to be on their radar, but the Serie A side are yet to lodge a bid for the youngster.

Eddie Howe’s side have also been linked to the likes of Joe Rodon from Tottenham Hotspur, however, a possible deal for the Welshman is believed to be on a loan basis.

Discussing the Tyneside club’s interest in Botman and the possible next steps in the coming weeks, Romano had the following to say: “What I’m told is Sven Botman is 100% not leaving on loan in January.

“They only want a permanent move. They turned down a proposal from Newcastle, it was €30m guaranteed plus add-ons to arrive around €35m, and they said no from Lille, they want more than this – around €40m/€45m. They’re not accepting €20m, they’re not accepting [€30m].

“So as of now, what’s happening? Newcastle, from what I’m told, are going to try again. So they’re still thinking of Sven Botman, but it’s very difficult to change Lille’s mind in January. So I won’t be surprised if Lille will end up this window keeping the player. Newcastle are going to push again.”

TIF Thoughts on Botman to NUFC…

With a diabolical defensive record, the Toon look set to add further to their defence, with Kieran Trippier believed to be the first addition to the new regime on Tyneside.

And we think Botman could prove a huge addition given the experience he has already gathered despite being of such a young age.

Not only do we think Botman would improve the squad Eddie Howe has currently, but at the age of just 21, he could be a long-term feature at the back as they aim for the sky under the new ownership.

Even after Steve Bruce’s departure, Newcastle have struggled defensively, so we feel alongside a new striker, it is critical Howe is able to bring in at least one new centre-back who can transform his backline.
