A whole host of Newcastle United fans were left furious on Twitter following Dermot Gallagher’s comments about Allan Saint-Maximin’s potential penalty claim at the weekend.

Newcastle managed to pick up their first away win of the season – and just their second win altogether – on Saturday when they beat Leeds United 1-0, however, it could have been a lot more comfortable for the Magpies had Saint-Maximin been awarded a penalty.

Was it a foul on Saint-Maximin?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The French winger ran with the ball and burst into the opposition’s box before cutting back onto his right foot, only to see it swiped away by Robin Koch, but no spot-kick was awarded.

However, despite there being clear contact, when asked whether he ought to have been awarded a penalty, Gallagher claimed on Sky Sports: ‘I didn’t think so on Saturday. The more I look at it, the more I might sway,’ so he still couldn’t say the referee got the decision wrong.

A lot of Newcastle fans were fuming on Twitter with Gallagher’s comments.

What have these Newcastle fans been saying?

“The guy laughing in the background says everything. Shocking how many decisions we haven’t had”

@kendallrowanx

“It’s a stonewall penalty. I think the way he goes down makes the ref not want to give it, but he’s clearly tripped him. The fact that we have VAR in the game yet that still isn’t being overturned is baffling.”

@nufcsanjay

“This is why the whole league needs a massive change in hands of referees, it’s a joke and these people are costing teams blatant penalty’s get it right man”

@DavyTodd1988

“this is a weekly occurance for us to be on here man”

@rossccore

“Suprise, suprise. They’ve literally got no shame.”

@ToonMouthTyne

“they don’t know what they are doing. Shocking.. The game is all about them!! Must change”

@geordielunn

“Shocking decision on St Maximin foul, it was a stonewall pen. VAR absolutely useless, they need looked into”

@alancaldwell71

While this decision did not end up impacting Newcastle, it could have been a great chance for the Magpies to settle their nerves and also maybe hand Chris Wood a chance to net against his former club and get his first goal for the Magpies.
