Fabrizio Romano has claimed Newcastle United are showing some serious interest in potentially signing Ousmane Dembele.

The football journalist was speaking on the Que Golazo YouTube channel with less than two weeks remaining for the Toon to bolster Eddie Howe’s squad.

Would you like to see Dembele signed?

Dembele’s future with Barcelona has been widely speculated in recent months, with the 24-year-old now believed to have been given a contract ultimatum.

However, due to the contract debacle going on at Camp Nou, Romano believes a move in the summer is more likely for the winger – although a January move could not be ruled out.

Despite the Toon currently sitting second-bottom of the Premier League table, Romano had the following to say on a potential move to Tyneside for Dembele:

“At the moment, it’s too early but Newcastle offered him a lot of money, approached him with a really good proposal [from] a financial point of view.

“But, of course, Dembele’s taking some time, because when you’re going to be a free agent, you explore the market before saying yes.

“So Newcastle are seriously interested in Dembele, but it’s not the only club. It’s not the only club and it’s gonna take some time. Some of these clubs are waiting to see what happens with Barcelona before jumping into the race with an official proposal. But I’m sure that Premier League is a serious possibility for him.”

TIF Thoughts on Ousmane Dembele to NUFC…

We think this would certainly be a statement signing for the Toon if they were able to bring in a star from Barcelona who cost them £126m just a number of years ago.

However, the glaring issue with signing Dembele is the risk the Magpies would be taking with his injury record in mind.

Since joining Barca, the Frenchman has struggled massively with maintaining regular game time, having missed an enormous number of games due to injury issues.

This season alone, Dembele has missed the majority of the La Liga campaign due to two separate issues, meaning he has only made six appearances in the Spanish top flight.

There is no doubt that a former Borussia Dortmund and current Barcelona ace would likely excite the fans, however, if the Toon did go for Dembele, it would certainly be a big risk given he is clearly looking for a huge weekly wage packet.
