Football journalist Dean Jones has been discussing Newcastle United’s interest in Todd Cantwell on the latest edition of Touchline Talk

Reports have recently emerged suggesting the 23-year-old could be in line for a potential January exit, with a number of Premier League clubs interested in the midfielder.

Do you want Cantwell at NUFC?

And one of those said clubs is believed to be the Toon, with the new ownership on Tyneside looking to give Eddie Howe the tools to pull the Magpies out of the relegation spots.

However, Jones believes it is not only sides within the Premier League that are showing an interest in the Norwich City man, with Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma believed to be a fan of the Englishman.

With reports suggesting it would take a bid in the region of £15m-£20m for the 23-year-old, Jones had the following to say on the Toon’s believed interest:

“I think Cantwell clearly has got to a case now where he is looking at other clubs and what options are there. And Newcastle, I think, is the good option for him.

“There are definitely a couple of other clubs looking at him. I’m told that Jose Mourinho’s even interested in him at Roma. Nothing too much there at this moment, but he was really trying to get him in at Tottenham and had him on his list if he’d have stayed as manager, obviously that all changed. But, you know, that’s a possibility.”

TIF Thoughts on Cantwell to NUFC…

Cantwell has had a difficult 2021/22 campaign to date, with the majority of the season spent on the sidelines due to injury issues, having made just eight appearances in the Premier League.

Having a manager with the experience of Jose Mourinho interested should certainly be flattering for the player to hear, especially when he has spent a lot of his career in the Championship.

In his only full Premier League campaign, Cantwell was able to score six goals and provide two assists, which is impressive for a young midfielder in a team that was relegated that season.

However, we are not fully convinced Cantwell is what Newcastle need right now. Howe needs players who will come in and hit the ground running to pull them out of the bottom three.

And having missed a lot of games already this season and with no goals or assists to his name, we struggle to see Cantwell making a big impact on the Toon’s short-term target of staying up.
