Newcastle United’s hunt for a central defender rumbles on. After appearing to fail in their pursuit of Sven Botman from Lille and with an offer sent to Sevilla for Diego Carlos, the Magpies now hold a ‘strong interest’ in Chris Smalling.
The news was reported by Teleradiostereo reporter Piero Torri (as per Siamo la Roma) in Italy, who claims that the Englishman will require convincing to switch Jose Mourinho’s Roma for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle.
Would you like Smalling at NUFC?
NUFC360 relayed the news to supporters, with many outraged by the nature of the interest. Many were fuming at the fact Smalling is not set on the club and believe he isn’t for them.
What the Newcastle fans said…
“If he needs convincing, I don’t want him.”
“I’m done if we sign him”
“Done well at Roma but if he’s not sure then don’t bother. We need players who want to be here now and can see the vision like Trippier #NUFC.”
“I’d rather see what Titus Bramble is up to these days.”
“Don’t bother. Needing to convince him? Have a day off.”
“Rather convince him to stay put.”
“Please don’t spoil this window”
You can’t argue with the Newcastle fans, really. If a player isn’t 100% committed to them and the cause, then they aren’t a good fit. They find themselves in the relegation zone as things stand, needing players who are ready to fight for survival.
That being said, Smalling would come with plenty of experience. He’s a two-time Premier League champion who has 417 first-team appearances to his name.
207 of those games came in the Premier League as a Manchester United player, adding to the 13 outings in the top flight for Fulham.
