Newcastle United fans have been reacting to claims from Keith Downie over a potential deal for Lucas Digne.

Downie took to Twitter to explain that Newcastle have submitted a bid of £22.5m and Sean Longstaff in a cash-plus-player deal in their attempts to sign the French defender during this January’s transfer window.

However, he did also note that a move to St. James’ Park isn’t necessarily top of Digne’s list and “would prefer a move elsewhere, with London duo Chelsea & West Ham interested”.

Digne’s future at Everton is currently unclear following a recent bust-up with Toffees boss and former Newcastle head coach Rafael Benitez.

When Toon fans saw Downie’s tweet regarding Digne, it generated a number of interesting responses, with some rather excited about the prospect.

Just seeing my club even attempt these kind of moves is blowing my mind. Trying to sign good players for weak squad areas, what a crazy concept I’ve never experienced before.
“This is unreal”
“Wow”
“That is brilliant knowing how much Rafa loves Longstaff”
“KEITH AT THE BACK POST”
“Hayden was just saying in a recent interview that life isn’t like fifa manager, but this transfer window, this offer to Everton does feel like fifa.. loving it.”

Will Newcastle sign Digne?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Despite the claims, it appears Toon fans should perhaps take them with a pinch of salt, as Downie went on to backtrack slightly, suggesting Newcastle’s approach was not ‘official’ and that they are in fact keen on keeping Longstaff at the club – so this story could yet go either way.
