Newcastle United fans have been reacting to an update from David Ornstein about their potential swoop for Sven Botman.
According to noted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are keen to sign the Lille defender in January and have made the Dutchman their priority by putting him ‘top of the list’ when it comes to defenders that they want to sign.
With the 21-year-old being touted as a ‘rising defensive star’ and Newcastle’s defence being the joint-worst in the league, it seems like a match made in heaven as Eddie Howe’s men look to avoid the drop, and according to Ornstein, the Magpies have taken one step closer to getting the deal done.
Writing in The Athletic, Ornstein notes that Newcastle United have “submitted an improved offer” for his services, whilst noting: “Lille’s financial situation could make a sale necessary, however, if Newcastle’s offer is strong enough.”
Ornstein also added: “It is thought that Botman is keen on a move to the Premier League.”
The journalist relayed his report on his Twitter account for fans to react to, where it generated a number of very excited responses from the Geordie faithful:
“Absolutely loving this get him asap”
Is signing Botman essential this month?
Yes
No
It should be noted that Ornstein does also claim in his report that it is ‘unclear’ what Lille’s response to Newcastle’s offer will be, so it’s far from a done deal at this stage. But given how badly Newcastle have done at the back this season, you can’t really blame the fans for being excited at the prospect of someone coming to fix things for them.
